Happy Holidays!

Well, another Christmas has come and gone. We had a nice, relaxing weekend. I made cards and custom name label stickers for the grandkids and then Christmas day we went to my grandparents' house here in town. Grandma made brisket for dinner and it was SO yummy, as always. And one of the gifts we got from my grandparents was the cutest. They always find the neatest things.

Johnny got each of the dogs two stuffed animals for Christmas and we wrapped them. Bozley was more interested in the wrapping paper and Nova just wanted the toys without actually doing any work to get the paper off. So she wanted us to unwrap them so she could play with the toy and Bozley was unwrapping the presents and then shredding the wrapping paper instead of playing with the toy. LOL. But one of the toys they each got was a chicken that makes recorded bird noises. It's so funny watching them play with them. Any time we press the part that starts the noise, they'll pick it up and carry it around in their mouth and then either put it in the kennel or by the backdoor. LOL.

I made Creamy Chicken and Noodles on Christmas Eve. And then Johnny has been wanting a ham, so I made a spiral cut ham last night for dinner. I'm not a huge fan of ham, but it actually turned out pretty tasty. I was going to make it in the pressure cooker like I did for Thanksgiving in 2021, but the ham I got was too big to fit. :P But it was basically the same recipe, I just cooked it in the oven instead of the pressure cooker. Oh and Johnny likes cloves (I'm not a fan of cloves, either), so I added whole cloves stuck to the ham over the pineapple.

I'm finally getting a new laptop! It's my Christmas present from Johnny...after Christmas so we can deduct it as an expense for next year's taxes. ;) It's basically just an upgraded version of the laptop I have now that's been trying to die several times this year. It'll be faster too...and everything should actually work! lol. I bought this laptop in June 2013...so it has lasted over 10 years. I'd definitely say I've gotten my money's worth...even though I spent extra money on it several times buying parts I had to replace. :P But luckily these laptops aren't hard to replace parts on. And I've liked my Dell laptop better than my HP laptops. Both of the HP laptops I had overheated and fried the motherboard despite always using them with an external cooling fan. Neither one of them lasted three years...one of them I had to get a warranty replacement 3 times in 2.5 years! So hopefully my new Dell laptop will last me a long time. :)

CandiMaker is still going well! December has been my most successful month so far. I also forgot that I'd uploaded a few of my animal stickers on eBay earlier in the month and I sold 9 stickers there on Tuesday! So my next goal is to get the rest of my stickers uploaded there. I'm at 352 orders and 440 sales in my Etsy shop as of right now. Sales only count different stickers in an order and not individual quantities. The total number of items I've sold this year in my Etsy sticker shop is 574! And on my sales map...the only places I have left are New Mexico, Delaware, and Washington DC. Since there's only a few days left of December, I probably won't get them all by the end of the year. :P For my first year selling stickers, I'm pleased with my progress. I really LOVE making stickers, so it's been a lot of fun.

RECIPE: Air Fryer Parmesan Crusted Chicken

So...I had a few leftover chicken breasts from a package I used to make Chicken Milanese a couple days ago as well as leftover mashed potatoes, corn, and gravy that we had with it. I ran out of Ritz crackers so I used breadcrumbs that I had leftover from the meatloaf that I made last week. So I decided to use the breadcrumbs on the last few pieces of chicken and it came out really yummy! I forgot to take a picture though. Maybe next time I make it, I'll remember to take a picture and I'll come back and post it here. :P

I made this in the PowerXL 12-in-1 Air Fryer Grill.

Air Fryer Parmesan-Crusted Chicken

Ingredients:
3 boneless skinless chicken breast halves
1/2 cup flour
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/2 cup real mayonnaise
1/2 tsp garlic salt
1/2 tsp paprika
3/4 cup breadcrumbs
3 tbs parmesan cheese
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp dried parsley
1/2 tsp Italian seasoning

Directions:
1. Remove fat from chicken breasts and pat dry.
2. Mix flour and pepper in shallow bowl.
3. Mix mayonnaise, garlic salt, and paprika in a shallow bowl.
4. Combine bread crumbs, parsley, Italian seasoning, parmesan cheese, onion powder, garlic powder, and salt in a shallow bowl.
5. Coat chicken completely in flour, then the mayonnaise, then the bread crumb mixture. Set each piece on the grill plate.
6. Set to Air Fry at 385 degrees F for 10 minutes.
7. Flip the chicken over, then set to air fry at 375 degrees F for 10-18 minutes depending on the size of the chicken breasts (until it reaches 165 degrees F).

RECIPE: Ginger Molasses Cookies

Ever since finishing the pumpkin bread I made for Thanksgiving, I've been craving something sweet. I had some molasses left after making the pumpkin bread, so I decided I'd make some ginger molasses cookies with it. I don't think I've had molasses cookies since I was little! I kinda just threw this recipe together, but they turned out really yummy. They're solid on the outside and soft on the inside with a wonderful "fall" flavor. Aubry said she liked these cookies even better than my chocolate chip cookies. :)

Ginger Molasses Cookies
Ingredients:
2 large eggs
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1/2 cup shortening
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup sugar + 1/3 cup for rolling
2 tsp vanilla
1/3 cup unsulphured molasses
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp baking soda
3 cups flour
1 tsp ginger
1 tsp cinnamon
2 tsp pumpkin pie spice

Directions:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
Mix eggs, butter, shortening, brown sugar, sugar, vanilla, and molasses.
In a separate bowl, whisk together salt, flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, and pumpkin pie spice.
Gradually add flour mixture 1 cup at a time and mix well.
Cover and refrigerate dough for 1 hour.
Remove dough and roll about 1 tbs of dough into a ball then roll it in the sugar and set on the baking sheet.
Bake for 10-12 minutes. Allow cookies to sit on the pan to continue cooking for at least 3 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to finish cooling.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving snuck up on me this year. About a week before, I was like...oh crap, I need to get groceries! I made a ton of food for Thanksgiving again...which means now I have a lot of dishes to do. :P

This year I got two 3lb boneless turkey breasts to cook in the pressure cooker. The last 3 years I got a bone-in turkey breast but it's always extra work to cut it all off the bone...so it went a little quicker this year. ;) I love using the pressure cooker... tender and juicy turkey in less than an hour. Then we had gravy, mashed potatoes, corn, Reames noodles, green bean casserole, cornbread casserole, candied yams, stuffing, macaroni and cheese, banana bread, and then the only new thing I made this year was cinnamon and sugar pumpkin bread which was super yummy. All that food...just for me, Johnny, and Aubry (Ashlyn went to have Thanksgiving with her dad). We always make a lot of food for Thanksgiving though...which I love because it means I don't have to decide what to make for dinner for a few more days since we have plenty of leftovers. ;)

The dogs enjoyed their Thanksgiving dinner too. ;) We added some pumpkin puree and a little bit of plain macaroni noodles to their dog food. They LOVE noodles. Well...Nova loves all food but Bozley is very fickle. He can like something one day and then want nothing to do with it the next. Even people food. Like cheese? What dog doesn't like cheese? Bozley about 95% of the time. :P But he ALWAYS loves pasta. They like turkey too, but I didn't leave any unseasoned for them so they didn't get any this time.

Aubry had gone to the store the other day with a friend of hers and bought two card games: Cards Against Humanity and What Do You Meme Family Edition. After we ate our Thanksgiving dinner, we played What Do You Meme for about 20 rounds or so and then we spent a couple hours playing Cards Against Humanity. It. Was. HILARIOUS. The funniest part is that Johnny would be reading through his cards and just start giggling...which made Aubry and I laugh and the more he read his cards, the more he would laugh. There were multiple times he was literally laughing so hard that he was crying. I laughed so hard it gave me a headache...which I didn't even know was actually a thing. lol. It was the three of us and "Rando" (random card from the pile each round) and we played 75 rounds. I got a lot of crap cards (I even traded in one of my cards to get almost an entirely new hand) but I did manage to win about 15 times. Rando beat me with 17 cards. :P Then I think Aubry had 19 cards in the end and Johnny had 24. It was a lot of fun.

Johnny has to work tomorrow. :( Aubry has a long 4-day weekend, though, so she's pretty happy about that...especially since she's been working some 10-hour days and a few 12-hour days here and there. We don't really have anything planned for the weekend...just relaxing around the house. Saturday it's supposed to snow...so I'm definitely not going to be leaving the house if I don't have to. :P I'll probably just work this weekend and enjoy all the leftovers. :) Oh and I got three Sims 4 expansion packs during their Black Friday sale for an early Christmas present so that's always fun. :)

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!

RECIPE: Cinnamon Sugar Pumpkin Bread

Like all the recipes I make (aside from those that are recipes from my family), I looked at a lot of different recipes and just came up with something that I hoped worked out. So far I've had great luck doing it that way...and this was no different. It turned out VERY yummy...and actually tastes a lot like my banana bread. :P

Cinnamon Sugar Pumpkin Bread
Ingredients:
3/4 cup 100% pumpkin puree
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup milk
2 tsp vanilla extract
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
1 tsp molasses
1 1/4 cup flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
1 tsp cinnamon
1 1/2 tbs sugar and 1 tsp cinnamon for top

Directions:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Grease loaf pan.
Mix pumpkin puree, vegetable oil, milk, vanilla extract, sugar, brown sugar, and molasses. Set aside.
In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt, pumpkin pie spice, and cinnamon.
Stir the wet mixture into the flour mixture just until the ingredients are no longer dry.
Pour into loaf pan and sprinkle the top with the cinnamon sugar mixture.
Bake in oven for about 30 minutes hour. Cover with foil and return to oven for 15-20 minutes or until toothpick in the middle comes out clean.
Remove from oven and let sit in pan for 10 minutes before placing on cooling rack.

UGH...my head :(

For the last almost 2 weeks I've been battling headaches and migraines. The headaches...they're more irritating than disabling. I've always had headaches for as long as I can remember so, sadly, I'm used to it. It's one of those things that's just always been normal for me and when I was little, I didn't realize that other people don't have daily headaches. My mom has always gotten headaches and migraines too...so that's what "normal" looked like to me. Luckily my headaches have only developed into migraines a few times in the last couple weeks. A couple nights I went to bed a lot earlier than normal because my head was hurting so badly. I even had to get up in the middle of the night at one point to get a new ice pack and more ibuprofen. BLAH.

The headaches are making me feel a lot less productive. There were a lot of things I'd planned to get done that didn't really happen. I did manage to design, print, cut, photograph, and list some Christmas sticker sheets in my Etsy shop, though. I have 4x6 Christmas sticker sheets and then 5x7 Christmas coloring sticker sheets...where you can color your own stickers. One is even a DIY color-your-own Christmas card with a blank Christmas tree and "Merry Christmas" on the front of a cardstock card (blank inside) and then a 5x7 sticker sheet with some Christmas decorations, presents, and gift bags that can all be colored and used to decorate the card. I thought it was a neat idea...especially as a craft project for kids. :)

I think now I've pretty much got all the Christmas stuff I plan to upload this year. Now I have a lot of other ideas I'm working on...including a lot more general sticker sheets, planner stickers, and of course more die-cut stickers.

Ooh! And I got my first Faire order on November 10th! I was so excited that I print and cut all 60 stickers that same night. Of course, then I couldn't get it in the mail until Monday because of the holiday...but I dropped it off at the post office first thing Monday morning. I really love doing wholesale orders so I hope my Faire shop is successful. :)

My Etsy shop is doing well. :) I have almost 350 sales from almost 290 orders in my CandiMakerStickers shop. I put my CandiMakerDesigns shop on vacation mode for now because I'm planning on completely revamping the products I'll be selling there. I plan to start making personalized planner covers, dashboards, folders, and even planner templates. I haven't decided yet if I'll be putting my planner-specific stickers in my sticker shop or my planner shop.

Oh and I tried setting up my TikTok shop...what a nightmare! After sending all my documentation, my shop got approved on October 31st. The following morning...I got a shop policy violation. When I clicked on the link for information on the "related policy" it sent me to the Negative Review policy. I hadn't even uploaded a single product yet...let alone had any orders or negative reviews. And then it stated that if I felt the violation was in error, to send in documents that were totally irrelevant to my business which consists of making my own products in my own home (like utility bills for my shop in my shop name, inventory invoices, etc). So I filed an appeal that same day on November 1st and it says on the appeal that they'll respond within 48 hours. Yeah well I STILL don't have a response.

So I started a support ticket. I explained that I got a shop policy violation for a completely unknown reason, the link took me to negative review enforcement, that the documents requested are irrelevant and impossible, and that I appealed the violation and still haven't received a response despite the appeal saying I'd get a response in 48 hours...and I included screenshots of the email, the link it took me to, and my appeal. Their first response to that ticket was literally within 3 seconds (I submitted my ticket at 11:16:18 and their response was at 11:16:21) was that if I believe the enforcement given was erroneous, to file an appeal. SERIOUSLY?! So I responded back that I ALREADY appealed and that was my entire problem. Then I get a message back the following day that starts with, "sorry for the inconvenience encountered with the ratings on your product," and that the buyer's review is compliant and I should reach out to the buyer to understand their concerns. WTF?! So I responded again to ask them what they don't understand about the fact that I've never even uploaded a single product yet and I've had no orders or reviews. Seriously...it's OBVIOUS that an actual person is NOT responding to support tickets.

So I tried using "live chat" but that was just as useless. They SAY that they're escalating my concerns to their specialized team...which is a load of nonsense. Basically they just create another support ticket with the live chat copied and pasted into it...but the same automated bots are obviously responding to those tickets. The first ticket created from the "live chat" agent...the response was, "Thank you so much for letting me know about that. I am totally happy with your situation that you have already approved and resolved the concern." Are you kidding me right now? I respond to ask what they're talking about because NOTHING has been resolved...and ask if there is even a person reading the support tickets. They respond again to say, "Good day! We do apologized for what happened on your account. Upon checking on my end that the violation is still on the process. Please bear with us about this concern that you had. We will reach you once of our relevant team will have ab update about this." All of those typos are theirs, by the way.

So I start ANOTHER live chat that is "escalated" and get another ridiculous response:
"Upon checking, the appeal already in success status, this will be reflected and all of the violation will be reversed within 1-3 business days, this should be fine now, if the violation still not removed after a couple of days, please don't hesitate to get in touch with us. I know where your frustration coming from, but I just wanted to tell you that your emotions are valid and we are currently working on good for this to give a better resolution to each and everyone of you, but for this matter we want to give the best that we can offer to resolve this matter, I hope you even appreciate each of our services."

Seriously? It reads like someone is just using auto-complete in a text message to type a response. People think Etsy seller support is bad...obviously they've never encountered TikTok seller support because I don't understand why anyone would sell on that platform with "support" like this. So I doubt I will be doing anything further with my TikTok shop. I definitely wouldn't suggest it to anyone else, either.

Online Labels Review

I'm so disappointed. Now that I have my new printer, I can print larger. Circut now has print then cut capability for 11x17 pages so I was excited about making larger sticker sheets (there's a full-page hack but it's time-consuming and with tiny stickers there's less margin for error). Ever since, I've been looking for some sticker paper or printable vinyl sticker paper that is 11x17 in size. All I found were between $1 and $2 per page. My current matte waterproof vinyl is less than 25 cents per page...so paying at least 4 times the price for only double the space...it's not a very economical option. So I was thrilled when I found 11x17 sticker paper from Online Labels. I'd seen people talking about OL forever and liking their sticker paper (although usually it's about their weatherproof paper) so I had high hopes. I bought a package of 100 pages of the 11x17 paper and was excited to try it out. And...now I'm returning it. :P

After printing and cutting 12 pages...they're all going in the trash. My Cricut keeps wanting to kiss-cut the pages too deep (I have it on the lowest pressure setting possible)...so I already have to mess around with the blade and the depth (raising the housing before I clamp it down) for my sticker sheets. But regardless of the cut, the pages curl horribly when I remove them from the light-grip mat. The brand of matte waterproof vinyl that I currently use for my sticker sheets don't do that on the same mat...so I know it's not the mat. I'm just so disappointed. :(

I also realized that their "no-hassle guarantee" policy for returns is completely different than their actual policy for returns. The no-hassle guarantee says, "If you're not completely satisfied with your order or the product differs from what you need, you can return the item to us within 60 days for a full refund." However, if you go into your order and start a return...it isn't a full refund if you're not returning a full, unused package. How would someone know if they're not satisfied if they haven't used the product? When I went through my account to start a return, it wanted to deduct the number of pages I'd used. And I was well within the "60 days" as I ordered it on the 15th and it was delivered on the 19th. Then when I went to their return policy under their FAQ, it says, "Ask our customer service representatives about our convenient return option. With this type of return, we'll send you a prepaid return shipping label. When we process your refund, you will receive your money back minus the cost of shipping." Again, that's not the FULL REFUND described in the "no-hassle guarantee."

So...they gave me a return label and I'm returning the paper in the same product packaging AND box that it was sent to me in. The customer service rep in chat said that I'd be getting a full refund...but the email with the return mailing label stated the refund amount did not include the original price of shipping.

It's totally fine for companies to have a return policy that doesn't include refunding of the shipping price or that the customer has to pay for their own shipping label to return. However, it's NOT okay for a company to say they have a FULL refund if it's not actually a FULL refund. And considering I had to go back and forth with the representative on chat in order to get the "one-time courtesy" of a full refund...it's definitely NOT a "no-hassle" moneyback guarantee. On their website they talk about their no-hassle moneyback guarantee that's supposed to be more convenient and instill buyer confidence...but then their actual return policy is the same as everyone else's. So honestly, I'm not sure that I'll ever order anything from their website again based on that fact alone. I don't appreciate misleading information.

This is why I shop on Amazon...which truly has no hassle returns. I don't have to find a box for the item at all...I just use the barcode that Amazon gives me and show it at either the UPS store or Kohls (depending on which one I choose) and then that's it. I'm usually refunded to my Amazon account within a few hours of that barcode being scanned...and then I turn around and buy something else from Amazon. I feel comfortable buying things on Amazon because I know that 99.9% of the time I'm going to have an easy solution to any problem I might have.

End of October!

It's hard to believe October is almost over already. Soon it will be the end of the year! The weather has gotten colder already...because of course we can't have fall for more than a couple of days. :P My health doesn't really like the change in weather. My neuropathy has been bothering me and I've had a headache for the last week.

In somewhat-related health news...I officially have a diagnosis in my file for Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. I've talked about hEDS in my blog before and how it explains every health issue I've had since birth. I've been talking to my doctor about it for the last year or so and after I got the genome sequencing back showing that I don't have any other types of EDS, that was the last thing I needed to meet the diagnostic criteria. We've been actively searching for answers since 2006, so it really feels good to have that particular chapter closed. No more testing or "specialists" who think it's all in my head. That's the thing about rare diseases, I guess...specialists would rather think you're crazy than consider a rare disease. But also...it's not like my hypermobility was obvious to medical professionals. Doctors and health questionnaires never ask if you can bend your fingers backwards or put your leg behind your head. :P And since it didn't hurt or cause any problems, it's not like I ever thought to bring it up. I was literally born that way and I just thought it was normal...because it was normal for me (and many of my family members). I do remember I asked whatever doctor I went to when I was in elementary school if I was double-jointed and all I got at that time was that there's no such thing as "double-jointed." But double-jointed is what I heard people say whenever they saw me do bendy things. So...I just never thought about it again until recently. And actually...someone from a parenting message board that I used to be active on suggested Ehlers-Danlos several years ago. But when I read the description, I saw "rare disease" and "abnormally" flexible joints...but I thought I just had "normally" flexible joints and even I dismissed it since it's a "rare" disease. I should've done more than a quick check of the definition though because there were so many other symptoms than just hypermobility that fit me perfectly. Section 2 of the hEDS diagnostic criteria have a list of different symptoms and at least 5 out of 12 have to be present for a diagnosis...I have 8: mitral valve prolapse, pelvic organ prolapse, abdominal hernias, dental overcrowding, arm span longer than my height (from my scoliosis), unexplained stretch marks as a teenager, soft skin, and mild skin hyperextensibility. My regular doctor has diagnosed and/or treated all of my issues since I was a teenager so I think that probably made him feel comfortable diagnosing me with hEDS. And I'm really thankful for that...because I hate going to specialists. :P

We also just celebrated my 42nd birthday! Johnny and I had Hibachi Boy and watched Expend4bles for my birthday. I also got a new wedding ring set. I actually got three rings...a tungsten band just like my old one that I can wear all the time (even in the shower) and then a new bridal set that I really only plan to wear when I leave the house. It's a big emerald cut engagement ring in a halo setting and a half eternity wedding band that goes with it. I have always wanted an emerald cut and it's so beautiful. :)

We also went to my grandparents' house for dinner Saturday for my birthday. Grandma made a yummy chicken spaghetti pasta, we had lemon Chantilly cake, and we played Hand & Foot (a card game). We played in teams and I was with Grandpa and mom...then Grandma, Johnny, and Aubry were on the other team. We won! There are several rounds in the game and there for a little bit Grandma's team was ahead. But then the last round Grandpa went out early so we came from behind to win by a lot. ;) I was also super excited to get an Amazon gift card which I've already used. I went through my Amazon wish lists yesterday and picked out lots of good stuff that is supposed to arrive tomorrow. :) Of course...it's lots of stuff for CandiMaker/my office. ;)

Things with CandiMaker are going well! As of yesterday, October has been my most successful month so far. A lot of people are seeing a slow October...but my September was slow. I had only 26 sales in September (although one of those sales was for 25 of the same sticker) and 46 sales so far in October. I sold 60 stickers in September and 72 stickers so far in October. I've also passed 300 sales (I'm at 311 right now)! It took me from January to August 21 to reach 200 sales...and just a little over 2 months later I hit 300. :) Yesterday alone I had 5 orders...and one was an order for 8 different stickers. I have my Black Friday sale going on right now through November 28th: 28% off orders of $20 or more. Discount is automatically applied to qualifying orders at checkout! If anyone is interested, check out my shop and see what you like!

This week I'm planning to make some more Christmas gift label stickers as well as decorative Christmas sticker sheets. I made one 5x7 Halloween sticker sheet which was a custom request, but my idea right now is to make several different Christmas sticker sheets so I'll probably make them in 4x6 size. I like to keep my sticker sheets between 4x6 and 5x7 because I can ship them via letter mail in my current materials that I use for die-cut stickers.

I also finally finished creating all the die-cut sticker listings for my Faire shop. I applied on October 2nd and was immediately accepted. I set up my shop story, cover and feature photos, etc. but it took me awhile to get all my listings up. I finally got that done yesterday and my shop is live as of today. I'm super excited to start selling wholesale. For any of my friends that are resale business owners, you can sign up on Faire and order stickers in bulk for 50% off MSRP in my Faire shop. If you're new to Faire, you can use my link to get some awesome benefits including $100 off your first order, 1 year of free shipping, 60-day payment terms, and free returns on your first order!

And if any of my crafty friends are interested in signing up to sell on Faire, you can use my link to apply. I'd been putting off signing up on Faire because I heard that the application process could take a long time and many weren't approved when they first signed up. However, I signed up with a friend's referral link and my application was immediately accepted. My shop just went live and I've already had someone send me a message saying they're interested in my products. :)

I'm trying to decide if I want to open a TikTok shop now. Same with Facebook. I previously had a Facebook "shop" but it was just tied to my Etsy shop so the products took them to Etsy checkout. Facebook did away with that option and I just never did anything to set up my shop directly on Facebook. So I've been thinking about that now that I've got my Faire shop set up.

Other than that...the joint graduation party for my sister, Aubry, and Ashlyn was a success! The Friday before we went to the shelter house at the lake to set up all the decorations. My mom, sister, and I were there almost all day. Dad was also there for a big part of the day helping blow up balloons. And then Saturday morning I got up at 6am to make Lazy Lasagna and Crackpot Chicken. I made double batches of both. Then Aubry and I got to the shelter house several hours early to finish setting up (Johnny and Ashlyn drove up for the party later). The balloons needed to be finished, we set all the food out, and Aubry helped set up the tables and chairs. The party went really well. I got a lot of compliments on the food and my cousin also loved the invitations so much that she wants me to make some baby shower invitations in a few months. :) Then after the party was the cleaning up. Ugggghhh...that felt like more work than setting up did. :P But Johnny was there to help this time. :) Even the girls and Aubry's friend who had come to the party helped with popping balloons and taking down decorations. I was SO SORE after the party though...and for about a week afterwards. My back just can't handle things like it used to. :P

Well...I think I'm going to head to bed. Hope everyone has a great week!

And now it's October!

It looks like I'm kind of in the habit of updating my blog once a month. :P I've just been really busy and when I have "free" time that I'm not spending with my family...I usually just use it to work on more sticker designs or product ideas. :P I basically work from about 10am until 2am everyday. Granted...it's not JUST working because I have to do dishes and laundry and make dinner and I do spend time with my family...but I just really enjoy working on CandiMaker stuff. It's easy to focus on your "job" when you love what you do. And I feel lucky...because a lot of people don't have that opportunity. If it weren't for the support of my husband and my family, I wouldn't be able to do it, either. So I'm very thankful for that.

Etsy sales have picked up again after a slower September. I had 26 sales in the month of September and then during the first week of October, I'd already gotten 14 sales. So that's always exciting. I had three orders yesterday and one from Monday that went out this morning. I've been having Aubry drop off my orders on her way to work in the mornings. She leaves EARLY so I just pack all my orders before I go to bed and then she grabs them when she leaves the house to drop them off for me. It's working out really nicely.

So...I've finally decided to let go of doing sublimation transfers. I really enjoyed sublimation at first...but once I started doing stickers, that's really where my passion was. I've kept my second Etsy shop up and continued taking orders for transfers, but I only get about one order per month aside from my sister...largely because I just don't devote the time to that Etsy shop compared to my sticker shop. I really only log into that shop when I get an order. My heart just isn't there right now.

I've been wanting to convert my ET-16650 back to regular pigment ink for awhile...but then I'd get an order and/or my sister would want some prints so I'd put more sub ink in the printer to complete the orders. And I wasn't going to waste the sublimation ink...so I didn't want to convert it until I'd used all the ink. BUT. Yesterday I noticed that the ET-16650 was on sale for $599...when it's regularly $1229. It's 51% off which is such a great deal. SO...I talked to my mom and sister and tomorrow I will have a brand new ET-16650. Eeeee! I'm so excited. My sister is going to get my current ET-16650 because she loves doing sublimation. And then my mom is going to get my ET-5800 that I've been using for stickers so far. She's been wanting to get a printer for awhile and she loves how everything I've printed for the party has turned out (including photos printed on glossy cardstock). The ET-5800 is basically the same printer as the ET-16650 except that it's smaller, slower, and only prints up to 8.5 inches wide. If there's anything that mom needs printed larger than 8.5x11, then I can print it for her. And if there's anything that I want sublimated, then Chrystine can do it for me. And I'll be able to print faster as well as print up to 13" wide which will really expand my product capabilities. So it's working out for everyone. :)

I'll be removing all the sublimation transfers from my other Etsy shop...but I'm not sure yet what I'm going to do with the shop itself. I'm thinking about leaving it as a digital product shop like it was in the first place. It started just as sublimation designs but I'm thinking about adding other digital products like spreadsheets and printables. That was the plan before I started stickers so I think that's probably what I'll go with. But for now I'm focusing on my die-cut stickers and my new sticker sheets. I've decided to do all my sticker sheets sized at 5x7 instead of full page. That way I can still ship them via letter mail with my standard shipping materials. So we'll see how that goes.

I also applied for a Faire shop and was immediately accepted. I've got the shop set up, but I haven't had time to start putting up my listings. I figure I'll do that next week when we're done with the graduation party. I've been printing and cutting a lot of stuff for the decorations...I just have a few more before I'm done with that. Then I just have to get the groceries for the two dishes I'm making for the party: Crackpot Chicken and Baked Rotini (although now I use bowtie pasta). It'll be nice to have the celebration...but I'll also be glad when it's over. :P

But on that note...I'm gonna get back to work!

Hello Fall!

Fall is my favorite time of the year. I love the colors, the weather, comfy clothes...just the overall atmosphere of fall. And when I was a kid...I loved back to school shopping and the first day of school. I LOVED getting new school supplies every year. And I remember back before the internet when the elementary school posted class lists on the doors and everyone gathered that day to find out which teachers you and your friends had. I liked the excitement of the first day...I'd plan my morning out to the minute. I'd write down every single thing I would do that morning and what I would wear, eat, etc (yes, I'm a nerd). ;) It was my own little tradition.

This is the first year that I didn't have a kid going back to school and it feels pretty weird. :P My youngest just turned 19 years old. It's crazy how fast the years go by. She actually moved back in with us last month. It's been...rough. :P She's having a hard time adjusting to the fact that she is an adult now and is entirely responsible for her own bills and expenses...and following the rules of being able to live here as an adult. They are expected to pay rent and the only meal that I provide is if I'm making dinner (and we have staples like sandwiches, mac n cheese, etc). Well...Ashlyn doesn't like everything that I make for dinner. One evening after she first started staying here, I was making tacos/burritos for dinner and she didn't want it...and asked me to buy her a Casey's pizza. Um...NO. She also wanted me to buy her new shampoo and stuff because she left hers at her ex-boyfriend's apartment instead of grabbing it the two times she'd gone back there to get stuff. So she talked her dad's other baby mama into taking her to the store and buying her a bunch of stuff. And baby mama had the nerve to tell Ashlyn that I'm a piece of shit for treating Ashlyn that way. LOL. Choosing NOT to cater to my ADULT child's every whim and instead making them be a responsible and self-sufficient adult does NOT make me a piece of shit. XH is 42 years old and living with his grandparents and driving one of their cars...because he is NOT a responsible and self-sufficient adult. I'm not making that same mistake. IF that's the kind of life Ashlyn chooses to live...it isn't going to be because my side of the family enables it. I told Ashlyn she is going to have to pay rent and buy all her own stuff...and she got a job within 2 weeks of moving back in here...after "trying" to get a job for 8 months before that. She didn't work very hard to get a job because she didn't have to. She was living at XH's parents' house and they were financing everything...then she moved in with her boyfriend and he was. But I made it clear that we will NOT be doing that so anything she wants...she has to work and save for it herself or do without. And if she's wanting to save up to get her first car...she's going to have to budget her money a little better and either ask for more hours at work or get a second job. :P We also don't allow her to drive our car...so she walks to work (although I have driven her to work like when it's too hot outside or if it's raining).

I've been an adult child living in my mom's house...more than once, actually. The longest time I lived there was when I quit working and went back to college. Since I already had my kids only 50% of the time, if I was going to college full-time AND working full-time then I'd never see them. And they were only 5 and almost 3 when I went back to school so those were years that I didn't want to miss. But...there were rules to living in my mom's house as an adult. I had to keep my living area clean and quiet. I couldn't touch the thermostat. If I cooked, I had to clean up after. I mean...it's pretty normal stuff. And when I moved into subsidized housing a few years later, I still wasn't working. While my rent and utilities were covered by the subsidy and we were on state medical insurance and food assistance...the only actual money that I had was the $72.92 that I got every two weeks in child support (when he was actually working). So there was a lot that I just did without. I didn't have cable and I tethered the internet from my phone for my laptop until my neighbor and I went in half/half on wifi. Each semester I had a little money left over from my Pell grant (I didn't take out any student loans)...which paid my liability-only car insurance every 6 months. I would ask for cash for my birthday in October and then I would use that money to buy the girls' Christmas presents. All of my furniture was hand-me-down (except for the queen size bed my Grandma bought me for Christmas one year) and everything I owned was well taken care of because I couldn't afford to replace anything...so it all has lasted a very long time (for example, we're STILL using the couch I got from my brother-in-law in 2007 which his family had since the 90s or something). So...I know what it's like to live with my parent and how to budget a very small amount of money each month. It's definitely possible for the kids to do the same.

Their rent is, like, at least 1/4 of what they'd be paying for their own place...and helps cover the increase in utility bills and extra food. Their lease agreement includes rules such as not leaving dirty dishes or trash around, taking care of their dog, cleaning up any messes they make anywhere...like...normal stuff. They each have things they do to help out around the house. Aubry takes out the trash and recycle and takes the carts out to the curb and back every week. Now that Ashlyn has moved back in, she unloads the dishwasher (Aubry was doing it before), feeds the cats, and scoops the litterbox. The only things I think could really be considered not that normal is being quiet (and no talking on speakerphone!) and not using lotions or perfumes that will give me migraines. And it's basically all the same rules as when they were living here as teenagers...it's just now they're also responsible for all their finances and any food they want outside of what I make for dinner.

Ashlyn just doesn't seem to "get" it, yet. She was appalled that I won't buy her food (and complained to her dad so he takes her to get groceries now). After she finished high school, she was going to have to pay her portion of the phone bill...but XH's parents just paid off her phone, got her a new phone, and put her on their plan. After she moved back in here, they removed her from their phone plan. Ashlyn wanted us to put her back on ours and said she'd give us $25 a month for it...when just her portion of the phone bill was $50 a month. She didn't seem to think that was a problem. Even though she has a job...she only works 1-3 days a week. So there's a lot of "I can't afford that" without doing anything herself about being able to afford "that" (and not wanting to do without). And I don't think moving in with XH's parents after high school--and having them treat her like a child they're providing for--did her any favors. But...I'm sure she'll eventually get the hang of adulting. Most of us do eventually.

And I know some parents are all...this is always your home and if you ever need anything just come and get it...but that's just not me or how I was raised. Occasionally helping out when I can for something truly needed...absolutely. But mooching just because they don't want to be responsible for themselves...absolutely not. As a parent, my job is to raise them to be responsible adults who can provide for themselves. They have to be prepared to live in the world without me. And I'd much rather my kids figure that out now...than when I'm actually dead.

My oldest turned 21 this year...and currently on her first road trip with a friend of hers. The girls left EARLY Saturday morning to check into their Airbnb. Aubry has sent me some pictures and videos...and they seem to be having a good time so far. Yesterday she went on a train ride and today they went to an aquarium. Aubry financed the trip all on her own (well and her friend that went with her contributed as well). She's been "adulting" very well since she moved in with us in December. She'd finished school and started her big girl job in February. And then a couple months ago, she bought a new car and purchased her own insurance. Her next goal is getting her own place. :) She's doing very well for herself and we're really proud of her. Aubry pays all her bills herself, buys all her own groceries and toiletries, and even has money to splurge on things like the life-size skeleton sitting in the backseat of her car. ;) Aubry is also the first-born...and I think adulting comes more naturally to those of us who are the oldest child. It's probably the whole bossy, take-charge personality thing that helps.

I've been super busy lately. We are having a joint graduation party for Aubry, Ashlyn, and my sister. Aubry graduated HS and Chrystine graduated college in 2020 when everything was being canceled or postponed. And then Aubry graduated from WSU Tech in 2022 and Ashlyn graduated high school in 2023...so we're having one big joint party for all of them. Mom came over and we came up with the general idea for the invitations and went over the plan for food. On the 18th I finished up designing the invitations. I had a big 25 sticker order to print and cut on Tuesday so on Wednesday I printed the invitations, drew the map to the venue and printed those, plus I designed, printed, and cut the return address and mailing labels for the invitation envelopes. It's nice to have that part done! Now we have a little bit of time to work on the decorations before the party next month.

This past Thursday and Friday I spent the days designing, drawing, printing, and cutting a new product for my Etsy shop: small business packaging sticker sheets! They're stickers that other sellers can use to decorate their product packaging and shipping materials. These stickers come on 5"x7" sheets in three different sizes: (30) 1", (12) 1.5" and (6) 2" stickers...all the same price with free shipping (since I can ship them as First Class letter mail). I have three separate "sets" of designs so far: pastel unicorns, cute spooky ghosts, and some cute Halloween cats. Before I make more designs of those...I'm working on another new product that I will be listing ASAP: Christmas gift tag labels! I'm planning to print and cut these as full letter-size sticker sheets and shipping them in rigid mailers via USPS Ground Advantage.

And on that note...I'm going to get back to work! :)

Always so busy!

I've been pretty busy since my last post.

Johnny and I celebrated our 6th/11th anniversary! It's hard to believe it's been so long. But I've been in love with that man even longer. As of June, it's been 18 years! On his birthday, I'd given him tickets to see the Pink Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon" 50th anniversary show at the dome theater...it was pretty neat. I'm not really a Pink Floyd fan...but he really likes them. And it had been awhile since we'd seen a show in the dome theater. It was really nice to have a night out.

I've been really busy with CandiMaker stuff...as always. I've been planning to retake all my product photos, but the set-up I had just wasn't working out. Initially I had the light on the tall tripod and was holding my phone to take overhead shots...but that was really hurting my back and the photos were less "uniform" so I was having to correct the perspective and do lots of cropping. Then I was using my tall tripod for my phone and the desktop tripod for my ring light...but I needed more flexibility with placing the ring light because the glossy laminate on my stickers catches glare too easily. So I got a tripod that I can leave clamped to my table to take pictures with my phone from overhead and then use the tall tripod for my ring light. Oh! And I decided to take the tabletop off my art desk, cover it with contact paper, and set it on top of the drawers where my Cricut sits. I even put contact paper on the shallow cardboard box that I keep in front of my Cricut to keep the mat flat. I'm really pleased with how it turned out. :)

So this weekend my plan is to finally retake my product photos. I have quite a few new sticker designs to list as well. I've also been thinking a lot about different products that I want to make in the near future too. I like to do a lot of planning before I launch new products...make sure I have my pricing and materials and everything all worked out first.

But first thing tomorrow I'm going to update my spreadsheets with all the new end-of-the-month figures. While I had 5 less orders in August than I did in July...I had more revenue in August. It definitely helped that I had one order for (25) 3" stickers! And today I had 5 orders...breaking my previous record for 4 orders in one day. :) Since June, I get about 5-15 orders per week. AND I've maintained Star Seller every month since June. Of course...that's just for my sticker shop.

Since I'm not very active in my other Etsy shop...it's pretty dead. I'd been getting at least one order a month in my other Etsy shop...but I didn't get an order in August aside from my sister. She's my biggest customer for sublimation transfers. ;) In fact...tomorrow I'll be printing like 90 pages for her. I'm still trying to decide what I'll ultimately do with my other Etsy shop.

On that note...I'm going to get a little more work done before I go to bed.

Hellooooo August! Goodbye Computer. :P

I've finally decided that "Johnny's laptop" (that he's had since 2015 but never uses) is now my laptop. *sigh* I really, really loved my laptop. It was a 15in Dell Inspiron that I got in 2013. I've taken apart and reassembled that thing SO many times in the last 10 years. Basically the only things I hadn't replaced on that thing was the screen, top cover, and anything soldered to the motherboard. I just liked the size, speed...and definitely the keyboard for when I was doing transcription. Several years ago, the grandkids knocked my laptop off of the couch downstairs and one of the clips covering the hinges broke off. Then for the last year or so...the screen had to be opened *just* right or it would blink on and off or get crazy lines through it. And yesterday...the network adapter card went out AGAIN. Unfortunately, my laptop is old enough that they don't even make that particular network adapter card anymore. I'd gotten a replacement card on eBay several times but between the annoying screen issue and now the network adapter again...I just decided to retire the laptop. :P And since we have another laptop that wasn't being used, it's not that big of a deal. I'm a little bummed though. I'd upgraded the RAM in my laptop to two 8gb sticks a long time ago and was going to take them out of my laptop and put them into this one...but there's only one slot that supports up to 8gb. UGH. It would've been nice to make this one a little faster...but it's largely just because I'm inpatient. :P

So yesterday I spent the day making sure I had everything from my old laptop updated on my external hard drives. I also cleaned up the drive on this laptop...got rid of a lot of old/duplicate stuff. And today I'm going through my--literally--thousands of fonts. I useMainType from High-Logic to organize and install my fonts and it's a lifesaver when you have as many fonts as I do.

Not what I planned for the weekend!

So...we had another impromptu home improvement project this weekend. Johnny and I sat down to eat dinner and watch a TV show together...when all the sudden I heard what sounded like waterfall downstairs. I ran down there to find water spewing out of the main water line that comes into the house through the cement basement wall. The copper pipe with the shut-off valve was completely detached from the wall. Johnny had to go outside to turn off our water from the main valve in the yard. It was, like, 10:30pm so there wasn't much else we could do to fix it. Johnny used the shop vac to get up all the water out of the room and then I spent 3 hours using the carpet cleaner on "dry only" to suck up the water that seeped out on the carpet outside of the room so it would be easier to remove. And basically we've been cleaning up ever since. We've finally gotten all the wet carpet and padding out of the area in front of the bedrooms and in Aubry's room along with the tack strips and baseboards. Johnny removed the drywall under the water pipe but there's more drywall that we'll need to remove. For now we have some Damprid and fans blowing to deal with remaining moisture. AND...I think tomorrow we're going to have to call a plumber. Johnny thought he had it fixed, but it started to have a slow leak so we turned the water back off tonight. We'll call a plumber in the morning to look at it and see what they think. I'm just tired of dealing with it at this point. :P And I know Johnny is getting frustrated. If it's not one thing, it's another!

It definitely was NOT what we had planned for the weekend. I had intended to retake product photos for all my stickers...but I didn't get that done. :P Last weekend I redid my mock-up photos and created some informational listing photos. I've been wanting to fill all 10 spaces for listing photos for awhile...so it felt good to finally get around to it. I eventually want to take a good listing video as well to upload to all my listings. But...that'll be for another day. And in August I'm going to work on my SEO some more...checking tags and titles to make them more effective.

Oh and last weekend I also revamped my pricing a little bit and set up some new promo codes for 25-45% off depending on the size of the order (the larger the order, the bigger the discount). I have them displayed in one of my listing photos, too. So hopefully that will encourage larger orders. My sticker shop really took off in March...and aside from April, my sales have increased each month since. Right now I'm at 154 orders and 180 sales. I've also made sticker sales to 41 states so far! I'm hoping by the end of the year to have all 50 states plus DC. :) The only ones I have left as of right now are DC, Nevada, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Mississippi, West Virginia, Delaware, and Rhode Island.

Well...I'm exhausted so I'm going to go to bed early tonight (at least earlier than usual).

Oooh! A shiny new toy!

Okay it's not actually a new toy. But...I'm going to spend a lot of time fascinated with it because that's the kind of nerd I am. ;)

Back in April I ordered a kit for whole genome sequencing. I sent it off the first week of May...and knew it would take a long time to get the results back. On June 21st, I got a notification that my kit was in the "raw data generated" phase and would be done within a few weeks. Then today before I woke up, I started getting emails that it was going through the rest of the steps...and tonight it was finally finishing up!

The Rare Disease Report was the first available...and I was really eager to look at that. The summary showed that I don't have any of the rare diseases, syndromes, or traits that were included in the screen. That's what I was expecting, though.

Last year, I realized that the explanation for ALL of my health issues since birth could be attributed to Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. It is actually a rare disease, but the most common form is Hypermobile EDS...for which there is no current genetic marker identified. I talked to my primary care physician about EDS earlier this year...and he said it wouldn't surprise him based on the way that I sit. He asked about my elbows and I showed him...then was like, yep! Hypermobile. So my chart already says hypermobile.

There's a diagnostic criteria used for Hypermobile...and I overwhelmingly meet that. The first part is basically how bendy you are. For someone my age you have to have 5 out of 9...and I have 8 (used to be 9 but now my knees hurt when I put my palms flat on the floor while standing) plus 3 out of the 5 extra ones that you can add if you fall one point below the requirement. The second part is about related health issues that one with hEDS is likely to have. There's an A, B, and C part...and you have to meet two of the three. For A...you have to have 5 and I have 8. B is a positive family history...but we never really heard about it until me so none of the rest of my family have been diagnosed (although my sister, nieces, daughters, and more seem to also be hypermobile). Then C you have to have at least one and I have all three. Then there's a third section and all three prerequisites must be met...which is basically ruling out other things including other types of EDS. With my Rare Disease Screen from the genome sequencing...I don't show the genes for any of the other types of EDS (which was a big reason why I did the genome sequencing in the first place).

I was 99% certain that I had hEDS...but I was curious about the periodontal variant of Ehlers-Danlos as well given the extent of the dental issues that I've had on top of the overcrowding that's normal with hEDS...but it looks like it's just hEDS.

So the next time I see my doctor for my medication refills...I'm going to take my genetic testing results and see if he's able to diagnose me since it's so obvious (and he's been my physician through all of the health issues that are on the list) or if he has to send me to a rheumatologist or something.

And now...I'm going to go through my 545 page Wellness and Longevity Report to see what other interesting stuff my genes say about me. ;)
